 What are the factors which may cause hearing problems for a new born?

Hearing may be affected during pregnancy, during delivery or after giving birth:

-During pregnancy: Maternal intake of some drugs or exposure or X-ray particularly in the first 3 months of pregnancy may be harmful.

-During delivery: Oxygen deficiency (bluish discoloration of the skin) or neonatal jaundice (yellowish discoloration of the skin ) and small for dates are the most important factors. It is highly recommended to check the hearing of any baby who was incubated for any critical birth condition

-During the first year of life: uncontrolled fevers  are important leading factors.

-Hereditary hearing loss: which runs in families is a very common cause in the Arab World because of consanguineous marriage and may be manifested in the first few months of life.
